Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: and, no man cometh unto the Father; but by me.” (John 14:6). In this simple statement, Jesus revealed that He is the only way to obtain true salvation and to be totally free from sin and death. Jesus’ saving work was completed when He took our sins onto himself at the Cross of Calvary, and there, He forever paid our sin debt and conquered death. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12).
Jesus, speaking to Nicodemus said, “Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3) and “…Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). It is clear from the scripture that it is absolutely necessary to be “born again.” The first birth is of “water” (an embryonic natural birth), and the second birth is a re-generational “spiritual” birth of the Holy Spirit. So, if God, through his loving-kindness and mercy, has led you to a point of decision today, consider now that “God is not willing that any perish but that all should come to repentance.” And, He has provided a way for salvation through his Son Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).
Salvation is a free gift of God to those who repent (both men and women), and this salvation is only obtained through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. Salvation cannot be gained through any works of righteousness that we have done, or can do. It is simply a free gift given to anyone who recognizes their wretchedness, lawlessness, and sinfulness and then repents of all sin while receiving Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. No matter how good you may think you are, you (like all mankind) fall short of the perfection needed to be saved. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). Only Jesus lived a perfect life and therefore only by Him can we obtain the righteousness required to get to heaven (2 Cor 5:21).
