The Lord’s Day is a glorious celebration of our rest in Christ! Following the pattern set by the New Testament church, we esteem the first day of the week (Sunday) as set aside for worship, the beautiful Lord’s Supper, spiritual activities, and gathering of the saints (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2, Revelation 1:10). We rest from all carnal labor such as work, school, and household chores (besides acts of necessity and mercy) as stated in the 4th commandment of the moral law, also known as the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11 and Deuteronomy 5:12-15). However, the focus is not on what we can’t do but what we can do.

Consider if you were married to the most wonderful man/woman in the world and had the opportunity to forget about your employment, schoolwork, and chores to go on honeymoon with them! What sensible person would want to take their laptop and check emails or work on calculus problems during their getaway with their beloved? Amazingly enough, our marriage is not to the most beautiful person in the world but to Someone far, far better - the fairest among ten thousand, Jesus Christ (Song of Solomon 5:10, Isaiah 54:5)! What a glory that we are not only permitted, but even commanded to go on honeymoon with our sweet Lord Jesus once a week. Far from seeing the Sabbath day as a rigor (for God’s commandments are not grievous: 1 John 5:3) in which we focus on do’s and don’ts, we crown this as the day which the Lord hath made - may we rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24)!
